Restylane Side Effects
by Brent Laungret Updated June 14, 2010Restylane is an injectable hyaluronic acid facial filler that is not made from animal products, and therefore, eliminates most of the infection risks associated with the use of an animal product. It is believed to be much safer and cause fewer allergic reactions than other methods of facial correction. There can be mild Restylane side effects, but most have been linked to the procedure itself, rather than the product.
Common Mild Side Effects of Restylane

The most often occurring Restylane side effects are bruising and swelling. This is to be expected with any facial injection. These side effects normally do not last longer than 1 to 4 days. They are not usually so severe that they cannot be covered by makeup. There can also be some pain, because anesthesia is not used with this injection. Occasionally, a patient will experience Restylane side effects such as; discoloration, redness and itching at the injection site, which usually clear up in a day or two.
Slightly Severe Side Effects of Restylane
For some patients slightly more severe Restylane side effects are possible. In most cases, hypersensitive skin is related to these problems. They can include acne-like eruptions or soreness and redness that last as long as 4 weeks. Some patients can develop lumps under the skin where the Restylane was injected. If they do not disappear on their own within a few days, the physician may remove them by using a massage technique.
Severe Side Effects of Restylane
Severe side effects of Restylane are few and far between. Drooping lips or crooked smile after lip injections can occur. The physician can administer hyaluronidase to dissolve the Restylane and reverse the problem immediately. Lip sores can also occur at times. Although it happens rarely, possible allergic reactions such as, dizziness, difficulty breathing and hives have been experienced.
Infrequent Restylane Side Effects
Occasionally, people who have Restylane injections experience flu-like symptoms such as, nausea, headache and muscle weakness. These symptoms can last for a few days or even up to a few months. Improper placement of the Restylane by the physician can cause rare side effects such as occlusion of a blood vessel, which will scab and form a permanent scar. Skin color changes have also been noted, though rarely. Restylane side effects have been reported in patients taking ACE inhibitors or those who have some types of genetic disorders.
Restylane Side Effects under Eyes
Most physicians do not recommend Restalyne for under eye circles. Restylane side effects in this area can be far more severe, as well as permanent. In some patients the discoloration under the eye becomes permanent and the eyes may not heal evenly; in rare cases blindness or ocular occlusion can occur.
Restylane is not permanent as it dissolves over a period of time and must be re-injected. Some treatments last 6 months and some up to 2 years. Restylane side effects can happen, but they are less likely than with other dermal fillers.
